Headstone care
A careful clean, by hand.
Including before and after photographs.
What a clean involves
Dirt comes off. The stone stays.
We start with water and a soft brush, working from the top down and rinsing as we go so nothing dries into the surface. Where there is lichen or staining, we use a stone-safe cleaner matched to the material and give it time to work.
Lettering, carved details and polished faces are cleaned around rather than scrubbed over. If a stone has an old repair, or marble that has begun to sugar, we stop and tell you before going further.
A deep clean is not a restoration. Weathering that has gone into the stone stays — what comes off is the dirt, growth and staining sitting on top of it.
- Stone-safe cleaning by hand
- Before and after photographs
- No pressure washers, wire brushes or bleach

What we never use
Three things we won’t bring.
- Pressure washers
- They lift lettering and sealant, and force water into joints that then freeze. The finish rarely recovers.
- Wire brushes and abrasives
- They take the tooled surface off granite and scratch marble deep enough that the marks stay.
- Bleach and harsh acids
- They stain, they pit, and they keep reacting inside the stone long after the visit is over.

Plans and cleans
A clean is not in a plan.
A tidy at each visit stops a stone from getting away from you. Where it has stood through several winters without a clean, one deep clean is usually enough to bring it back — and a plan keeps it that way afterwards.
Not sure whether the stone needs a clean at all? Send us a photograph and we will tell you honestly.
